49ers' 4-0 start hides a rift: Brock Purdy's mechanics quietly under fire

The San Francisco 49ers are 4-0 for the third time since 2019 and the seventh time in franchise history, but the conversation inside the building isn't about the record.
Brock Purdy completed 19 of 30 passes for 218 yards and 2 touchdowns with a 107.4 passer rating in Sunday's 24-14 win over the Denver Broncos at Levi's Stadium. He also tied his career high with 10 carries for 29 yards. It was his fourth straight game with at least 2 touchdown passes and a passer rating of 100.0 or higher.
The numbers look like a quarterback playing the best football of his career. The film tells a more complicated story.
Purdy's mechanics — his footwork, his base, the timing of his release — have quietly become a point of discussion among people who study the position. The concern isn't the production. It's whether the production is sustainable.
Part of what's fueling the conversation is how clean the pocket has been. The 49ers have allowed 0.0 sacks in each of their first four games, becoming the first team to start a season with four consecutive games without allowing a sack since the Indianapolis Colts in 2005, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. It's also the first time the franchise has gone any stretch of four straight games without allowing a sack since 1965.
That protection has given Purdy time he won't always have. When the pocket collapses — and eventually it will — the question is whether his mechanics hold up under pressure.
Kyle Shanahan coached his 167th game for the 49ers on Sunday, passing Hall of Famer Bill Walsh for the most games coached in franchise history. He improved to 2-1 against the Broncos and 5-5 against the AFC West.
The 49ers are now 9-8 all-time against Denver, including 6-3 at home. They've won four of the last six meetings and are undefeated at Levi's Stadium against the Broncos.
None of that addresses the thing nobody inside the organization wants to say out loud. A 4-0 start is a cushion. It is not a diagnosis.
What happens when the sacks start coming — and whether Purdy's mechanics can absorb the hit — is the question that will define this season.
