Lightning and Blue Jackets Place Two Forwards on NHL Waivers

Two forwards hit the NHL waiver wire on Tuesday, and both could be on the move before the week is out.
Tampa Bay Lightning center Jansen Harkins and Columbus Blue Jackets winger Mikael Pyyhtia were each placed on waivers by their respective clubs. Every other NHL team now has a window to claim either player. If both clear unclaimed, they become eligible to be assigned to the American Hockey League.
Harkins, 29, suited up for Tampa Bay's season-opening 5-1 loss to the New York Rangers on October 1, logging just under 11 minutes of ice time without registering a point. He signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Lightning this past offseason.

The Cleveland, Ohio native spent last season with the Anaheim Ducks, where he appeared in 44 games and posted three goals and five assists for eight points. Originally a second-round pick of the Winnipeg Jets in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, Harkins has also played for the Pittsburgh Penguins during his career. In 306 regular-season NHL games, he has 18 goals and 27 assists for 45 points. He is the son of former Calgary Flames and Hartford Whalers forward Todd Harkins.
Pyyhtia, 24, has yet to appear in a game this season. The Finnish forward spent most of last year with the Blue Jackets' AHL affiliate, the Cleveland Monsters, where he recorded 29 goals and 28 assists for 49 points in 59 games. He added three goals and two assists in nine playoff games for Cleveland.
At the NHL level, Pyyhtia has played 71 career games, all with Columbus, scoring five goals and adding six assists for 11 points. He was selected by the Blue Jackets in the fourth round of the 2020 NHL Entry Draft.
For both players, the next 24 hours will determine whether they stay in their current organizations or get a fresh start elsewhere. Teams around the league in need of forward depth now have a decision to make — and for Harkins and Pyyhtia, the wait is on.
