Canadiens' Demidov Out 2-4 Weeks, Kreider Signing Already Paying Off

Ivan Demidov will miss the next two to four weeks with a lower-body injury, the Canadiens confirmed, removing Montreal's young star winger from the lineup at the worst possible time.
But the Canadiens have a cushion — and it's the kind that doesn't show up in highlight reels.

Chris Kreider, signed late in the off-season to a one-year, $2.15 million contract, has a goal and two points through Montreal's first two games. It's exactly the kind of start that turns a questioned depth signing into a fan favorite.
When the Canadiens picked up Kreider, the move was framed as a smart add for an already-strong roster. A veteran presence. A playoff warrior. Someone who wouldn't break the bank.

Now that Demidov is sidelined, that framing looks even better.
"Kreider shouldn't be seen as any kind of savior, of course, but he does have a goal and two points in Montreal's first two games," The Hockey News noted. "That's the kind of start that will endear him to Habs fans."

The bigger story is what Kreider's modest cap hit allows. Montreal is carrying roughly $1.9 million in available cap space — not much, but enough to matter. If Demidov's injury drags past the four-week mark, the Canadiens gain more roster flexibility and could become real players at this season's trade deadline.
General manager Kent Hughes didn't stumble into this position. He had to sell Kreider on his role during negotiations, and he chose to hold onto cap space rather than spend to the ceiling.

At 35, Kreider's effectiveness will eventually decline. Father Time is undefeated. But at $2.15 million, the risk was minimal — and the upside, especially now, is real.
The test comes next: can Montreal hold the line while Demidov recovers, and does Hughes use that cap space to swing big in March?
