Gavin McKenna Scores First NHL Goal, Silences Doubters Instantly

Gavin McKenna had gone three NHL games without a single point. Then, in one second period, he had two — including the goal that pulled Toronto back into a game it eventually won.

The 18-year-old rookie and No. 1 overall pick scored his first career NHL goal and added his first career assist Tuesday night as the Maple Leafs erased a deficit and beat the Nashville Predators 5-4 in a comeback that needed overtime.
McKenna's first point came on an assist on John Tavares' second-period goal, cutting the Leafs' deficit to two. Scotiabank Arena gave him a standing ovation. Minutes later, he rifled a shot over the shoulder of Predators goaltender Juuse Saros, with an assist from former first-overall pick Auston Matthews, to pull Toronto within a goal.

It was the kind of breakout Toronto had been waiting for. McKenna, a Whitehorse native, arrived with enormous expectations as the top pick in a hockey market as intense as any in the league. Through his first three games, he had nothing to show on the scoresheet, and fans were getting anxious.

Social media reaction came fast. "Guys I think Gavin McKenna is going to be just fine," wrote @RealPaulRoss on X. Sportsnet's Sam McKee called the goal "a first career goal fit for a future super star" and "an absolute laser beam." Spittin' Chiclets host and former NHLer Ryan Whitney added, "McKenna with his first. 2 points tonight now happy for him kid is going to be so nasty." One account, @StickEFingrs, went as far as calling him a Calder favorite.

It's far too early for award talk. But the performance was an early signal that McKenna may have the talent to match the hype.
Matthews ultimately stole the result, scoring his second goal of the season on a rebound from William Nylander after Toronto forced overtime. Still, it was McKenna who was named the first star of the game.
The question now is whether Tuesday was a one-night spark or the actual beginning. Toronto's season — and McKenna's rookie campaign — will answer that soon enough.
