Panthers captain Barkov out 6-8 weeks, no surgery needed

Aleksander Barkov will miss six to eight weeks, and for once the news out of Florida comes without a surgical scare.

Panthers head coach Paul Maurice confirmed Tuesday that his captain will rehab a lower-body injury rather than go under the knife, according to team reporter Jameson Olive. Maurice described the window as the best-case scenario: "That's our best window. Could be a little less, could be a little more."
Barkov was placed on long-term injured reserve after he fell awkwardly on his left leg against the San Jose Sharks. He exited Thursday's game and did not return.

The earliest he can be activated off LTIR is Oct. 27 against the Winnipeg Jets, which puts a realistic return somewhere in mid-to-late November.

The context is what makes this hurt. Barkov missed all of last season with a torn right ACL and MCL, and the Panthers — back-to-back Stanley Cup champions before his absence — did not make the playoffs without him.

Now the roster reshapes around his cap hit again. Placing Barkov on LTIR gives Florida just under $4 million in space. If he were designated out for the entire season, including the playoffs, the Panthers would gain the full $10 million tied to his cap hit.
Barkov, a three-time Selke Trophy winner, posted 20 goals and 71 points in 67 games in 2024-25.
Florida entered Tuesday night's matchup with the Los Angeles Kings at 1-0-2. The question now is whether the Panthers can hold their season together long enough for their captain to return — and what the front office does with the room his absence creates.
