Sharks Captain Macklin Celebrini Day-to-Day After Surprise Scratch vs Stars

Macklin Celebrini warmed up with his teammates Monday night, then never took the ice for the game.

The San Jose Sharks captain was a surprise scratch for Monday's contest against the Dallas Stars with a lower-body injury, head coach Ryan Warsofsky said Tuesday. According to San Jose Hockey Now's Sheng Peng, Warsofsky described the injury as day-to-day and said it occurred sometime earlier. The 20-year-old is still being evaluated, and it remains unclear whether he will miss additional games.

The timing is awkward for a Sharks team that has started 2-1-0, with Celebrini leading the club at five points.

Celebrini, the No. 1 overall pick in 2024, appeared in all 82 games last season and broke out for 115 points, finishing fourth in Hart Trophy voting. San Jose rewarded him in July with a five-year, $94-million extension, then named him captain in September — making him one of the youngest captains in franchise history.

San Jose plays the Blues in St. Louis on Thursday before returning home to host the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday. The Sharks have not provided a timeline beyond the day-to-day designation, leaving open the question of whether Celebrini will be available for either game.
Losing their captain and top scorer, even briefly, would test a young Sharks roster still finding its footing early in the season.
